How to test the existence assertion for investments?

The audit team should send confirmations to the 3rd party broker that holds the securities. Basically, the audit team just needs to verify that any investments listed in the asset section of the balance sheet actually exist.

The nice thing about sending confirmations is that they can also be used for addressing the rights & obligation assertion and possibly the valuation assertion.
