Do I work in public or private accounting?

Public accounting is when the accounting firm or the accountant serves a 3rd party like a corporation, individual, not-for-profit organization, or a government organization. Private accounting is when the accountant performs accounting and financial tasks for their employer. Private accounting is often referred to as “industry accounting”. To figure out whether you are in public or private accounting, ask yourself who you are serving!
